Notes from the Captain

It’s fun making up words. You should give it a go.

I made up a few for Monday’s post, but I do sort of wish I’d spent a bit longer on them. Time was not on my side. There’s probably a word for that…

Feel free to make one up and let me know.

Until next we meet, love what you love,

Your Captain, Janeen 🫡

Thangs mentioned in this episode…

👩‍✈️ The Meaning of Liff

From Wikipedia

“The book is a "dictionary of things that there aren't any words for yet". Rather than inventing new words, Adams and Lloyd picked a number of existing place names and assigned interesting meanings to them, meanings that can be regarded as on the verge of social existence and ready to become recognizable entities.

All the words listed are toponyms and describe common feelings and objects for which there is no current English word. Examples are Shoeburyness ("The vague uncomfortable feeling you get when sitting on a seat that is still warm from somebody else's bottom") and Plymouth ("To relate an amusing story to someone without remembering that it was they who told it to you in the first place").

1990 saw an amended version called “The Deeper Meaning of Liff”. Douglas Adams passed away in 2001, and another edition called “Afterliff” came out with additional entries by Lloyd, Jon Canter, and Douglas Adams's daughter Polly.

There is a 30th Anniversary “New and Unimproved!” edition available.

👩‍✈️ Invented Word Facts

The video from Monday’s post about nonce words.

The G.O.A.T. of invented words, William Shakespeare, is credited with coming up with 1,700 words. I think the key word there is ‘credited’. He might not have invented any of them and was just the first to put them in plays and such. People been fightin’ ‘bout this for a while.

👩‍✈️ The Aristocrats

It came out in 2005! I saw it in the cinema. Yes, I used to go watch documentaries in the cinema.

👩‍✈️ Who’s a good robot boi?

There is a brief glimpse of K9, Dr. Who’s robot dog, in the video. Here’s a stupidly long supercut f him saying affirmative for no particular reason.

And here’s Tom Baker saying what he really thinks about his dog’s abilities… maybe. A sweary doctor! Be warned.

I think that’s it…. thanks for listening/watching/being.

Do something great this weekend.

Do. Make. Be.
