Notes from the Captain

Crew, we have lost one of our dreamers.

Drop a thought into the stream for Mr. David Lynch.

David Lynch was a member of my Creative Philosophy advisory board. He may even have been president. My thinking has been much guided by this mentor…whom I never met.

Loves me a man with a good work ethic.

Loves me a man with a code.

With an idea.

With a dream.

❤️ David Lynch.

One joyous thing has been my timeline filled with David Lynch video and interviews and thoughts (some below) and the seemingly universal love people had for him.

He could be grumpy, weird, mysterious.

Sad, happy, mad.

He was, in short, the most 100% David Lynch David Lynch could be.

I won’t intro this week’s post too much—a video above (watch it!) and lots of links below—but if you’re feeling down in the dumps about his passing, here are two videos with David Lynch talking about death.

Remember: Never give up final cut, and keep your eye on the donut, not the hole.

Vale, David.

🫡 This student of the daydream salutes you.

Thangs from this episode…

👩‍✈️ David Lynch Mega Dump

My timelines have been filled with wonderful David Lynch things since his passing, which I think helped turned a sad time into joyous celebration of his life and creativity and exploration. Here are some things I read or watched.👇

Thing to read:

David Lynch: Unpacking the iconic director’s influence on fashion - Dazed
Kyle MacLachlan: How David Lynch Invented Me - The New York Times (“Kale” also put some excerpts up on his insta)
David Lynch Saw the Nightmare Beneath the American Dream - Vanity Fair
A one-way trip to heaven’: cigarettes were David Lynch’s magic wand – and his undoing - The Guardian
David Lynch’s (Possible) Realism - The New Yorker

Read David’s book, “Catching the Big Fish.” It’s a quick read.

Things to watch:

There is no shortage of things to watch at the YouTube channel, David Lynch Theater (including the weather reports he was doing in lockdown and a bunch of short films).

Someone put his entire 3-hour Masterclass on YouTube. (I expect that’ll be taken down at some point, so jump on it while you can.)

I shared this recently, but here’s another plug for The Interview Project.

I can’t recommend the incredible documentary “The Art Life.” When it first came out, I pushed people to watch it SO HARD and I must’ve sounded like a stalker. It’s uploaded on YouTube—and again, who knows for how long before it gets taken down—but it’s also officially on Criterion for free until end of January and you should buy or rent it anyway as it is amaze. The trailer 👇

Here’s a 15 minute excerpt to get you in the mood 👇

Interview with Charlie Rose👇

David answering questions like, “How does meditation help in the creative process?” - at a TM event 👇

“It’s a thick beauty to appreciate life and living.” - David Lynch

A young David Lynch talking about Eraserhead in 1979 (I snagged the audience reaction footage in my video from this.)👇

If you didn’t know, David Lynch’s biggest break came when Mel Brooks - yes that Mel Brooks - picked him to direct Elephant Man.

“Mel Brooks took a chance on me.” 👇

Things to listen to:

David Lynch made a lot of music, and said many times he was fascinated by sound. Here is a playlist of David Lynch music and collaborations.👇

He was also was very specific about music choice in his films and television productions (alongside things written specifically for those shows.) Very much a vibe builder. Here’s a playlist someone else made of music from movies and TV (and I’m trusting it to be accurate.)👇

And finally…

Backwards speaking is hard. I sort of wish I’d watched this before I tried. In my defense, I did it off the cuff in this week’s video. Last minute INSPIRATION that… sort of works. But is not very good. Not like these pros!👇

“I am the arm and I sound like this.” 👇

👩‍✈️ The Persistence of Memory

“Hand painted dream photographs.” - Dali on his paintings.

“A moving painting.” - David Lynch on why he likes film.

I could’ve done a whole sidebar on talking about this painting, but I am saving you from me. Here is a video that is far more edumakational that I could ever be. 👇

👩‍✈️ The K-Mart Reel to Reel that started it all

This was the story. 1973 Kmart Reel-to-Reel

This is the audio.

Ok. That’s it. Thanks for listening/watching and sharing this week. If you want to comment on any of the concepts in last week’s post—or just in general—feel free to leave a comment for the Captain (it me.)
