Notes from the Captain

Fruit on trees—that’s what ideas are. Some fruits are ripe and ready, while others are green, tart, and resistant. And yes, some have worms in them, but all fruit—and ideas—hang from branches just waiting to be plucked.

Sometimes, all it takes is a word, and BAM! you’re making fruit pie.

This week, a word leaped off the fruit tree from within the lyrics of a song and that’s really all it took to get this gal baking.

Hot from the oven, it landed on Monday, and today we dig into the ingredients.

How the pie will tastes is entirely up to the person with the fork. I hope you enjoyed it.

Until next we meet, love what you love,

Your Captain, Janeen 🫡

Thangs mentioned in this episode…

👩‍✈️ The song, “Oh General” by Ten Benson

I put the song in Monday’s post, but here it is again, with the lyrics below.

Oh General
Speak to me
Tell me of conflict
Across the sea
Of casualty figures
And civilians lost
I'll write the story
And Bob here'll take the shots

Oh General
Speak to me
War may be messy
But it looks great on TV
Ratings are soaring
And you are the star
Your public are waiting
So let’s kick a***¨

👩‍✈️ Types of Story Conflict

The number of conflict types varies according to your source. Some say 4, some 5, some 7. No one can seem to agree. Conflict! See how exciting it is?

👩‍✈️ A swift thwack with a Shillelagh

I think I said Vox had a story about Shillelagh Law, but I misspoke—it was Vice.

And a video with some background on how they’re made and such.

👩‍✈️ Clips used in this week’s video

The Littlest Hobo Theme Song

It seems to me that the TV theme songs from my childhood are the ones I know by heart. Weirdly, when I looked this up I didn’t remember the dog looking like that AT ALL!

Dr. Strangelove

I almost put the alternate-ending pie fight from this movie under the song lyric “Tell me of conflict” in my video, but I couldn’t find it. To compensate, here is a photo I loved of Peter Sellers sitting in the custard pie wreckage. Some more photos from the cut scene, here.

Apocalypse Now “horror” speech

Anchorman fight

Gangs of New York

I can’t embed the footage of when Bill the Butcher kills Walter McGinn (it’s too brutal) but you can watch it on YT. Get a good eyeful of a Shillelagh too.

Hard Rain - BEST live performance of all time

Also, watch the Rolling Thunder documentary on Netflix because it is incredible and cheeky all at the same time.

What We Do in the Shadows

While Colin Robinson is my fav, Laszlo would be crushed if I didn’t call him out for being a sexy vamp. Did I say sexy? I meant sex-obsessed.

Spinal Tap

I think that’s it…. thanks for listening/watching/being.

Do something great this weekend.

Do. Make. Be.

Moving on!
